On this day in 1912, Bihar was carved out of Bengal Presidency. Our culture is very rich and diverse, which has maintained its unique identity from ancient times till today. A beautiful blend of history, art, music, dance, food, and religious traditions is seen in our culture.
Biharh as been a major center of our country. The Magadh Empire, Maurya and Gupta dynasty ruled here, which deeply influenced Indian culture.
Our Bihar is the state where Buddhism and Jainism originated.
Bodh Gaya is where Buddha attained enlightenment. There are holy places like Rajgir, Nalandaa nd Vaishali.
Pilgrimage sites like Gaya are also important for Hinduism, where Pinddaan is performed for ancestors.
Bhojpuri, Magahi, Maithili, and Hindi are mainly spoken here. Maithili is a language included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
The Maithili literature of the Mithila region and the works of poet Vidyapati are famous, who enriched love and devotional poetry.
Madhubani painting (Mithila painting) is a world famous art. It is known for colorful and intricate designs, usually based on nature, mythology and religious stories.
Weaving of cotton and silk fabrics, such as Bhagalpuri silk, is also a specialty here.
Folk music includes Bhojpuri songs, Sohar (birth celebrations), and wedding songs, which express the emotions of rural life.
Our food habits are a unique amalgamation of simplicity and taste. Litti-chokha is the most popular dish, which is made of roasted flour balls and a mixture of brinjal-potato.
Sattu (roasted gram flour), dal-bhaat, and sweets like khaja, tilkut, and thekua are also famous.
Chhath Puja is the biggest and unique festival in which the sun and nature are worshipped. It lasts for four days and is celebrated with great devotion.
The spirit of joint family, mutual brotherhood, and hospitality still has deep roots in our culture. Rural life is the basis of the culture here, where people keep the traditions alive even today.
Our culture still serves as a bridge between its glorious past and the present.
